The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued new labeling for the hormone-blocking drug Arimidex, a treatment for breast cancer.
The label was for the new drug to treat postmenopausal women whose doctors diagnosed them with early-stage breast cancer after receiving anastrozole as an adjuvant treatment. The new labeling will also cover a new indication for the drug.
The label says the drug can slow the progression of advanced breast cancer and that patients with early-stage disease may benefit from the drug.
The FDA said it had not received a formal letter from the maker of the drug, AstraZeneca, which is the maker of Arimidex.
It said the company had notified the agency on January 2 that it was considering a change to the label for the drug.
In an order issued on June 15, the FDA said, “The label on this product does not include a mention of the drug’s use in early-stage breast cancer patients, as it does not include a list of the drug’s indications in early-stage breast cancer patients.
“There are no FDA-approved indications for the drug in early-stage breast cancer patients,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, who was not available.
The agency also said the drug is not indicated to treat breast cancer that had spread to other parts of the body.
The drug will be available through the FDA’s website on the agency’s website.
The drug will be used to treat patients with advanced breast cancer that has progressed after treatment with tamoxifen or anastrozole, or those with a hormone-blocking hormone receptor (Hormone-Ab) receptor, such as HER2. Anastrozole was approved in the United States in December, 2000.
Patients who took the drug for an unknown or later period after treatment with anastrozole will have to use it for 10 years to prevent cancer from occurring.
AstraZeneca and the drug’s maker, Eli Lilly and Company, have agreed to settle the litigation brought by AstraZeneca and Eli Lilly, the makers of Arimidex, on Wednesday in a settlement of more than $4.1 billion.
AstraZeneca, which has $7.4 billion in commercial assets and $1.2 billion in litigation in the United States, has agreed to pay $2.7 billion to resolve the lawsuits, which are pending in the U. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
The lawsuit was filed in the federal court in Virginia.
The companies have agreed to settle the litigation and to share in the settlement proceeds.
AstraZeneca will pay $2.8 billion to resolve all of the litigation, which are pending in the U.

In addition to anti-estrogenic properties, Arimidex works by reducing the production of circulating estrogen, which helps to relieve osteoporosis symptoms.
